Criteria for installing the NORTON-2500-OIL mechanism on your gate

The NORTON-2500-OIL mechanism is reliable and tested in the Greek market. It has capabilities that cover most sliding gate situations. In detail:
  • Can be installed on a gate leaf with a maximum weight of 2500kg.
  • Can be used up to 50 consecutive times.
  • Can be used up to 150 times per day.

2500kg of gate weight is a quite high limit if we assume that the average weight of sliding gates is usually 60-70kg/m. However, if the weight of the gate is not known, it is advisable to ask its manufacturer. From our experience, the above mechanism covers most cases of sliding gates.

The 50 continuous uses cover most cases of apartment buildings, since even during peak hours, it is difficult to exceed this limit. The motor has thermal protection. This means that if use is exceeded and it overheats, movement is interrupted until the normal temperature is restored. It is logical that short doors, in a cold environment, can perform more movements than long doors in a warm environment. If the motor stops moving due to overheating, the door must be operated manually.

The daily uses can cover, for example, over 35 cars that will use it 4 times a day. These uses (compared to uses per hour) are the optimal operation for the mechanism to last many years without problems.

Sliding garage door with mechanism - Features

characteristics of a sliding gate with mechanism

A classic arrangement of a sliding gate with a mechanism naturally includes the gate leaf, which has wheels at its lower part. The wheels must be well-maintained so as not to hinder the movement of the gate and the mechanism.

The rail, on which the wheels move, is properly fixed to the ground. The rail must be straight without bumps or deformations.

The gate leaf is held upright by the rollers. The rollers are positioned so that they are always in contact with the gate from the fully open to the fully closed position. They must be stable and not allow the gate to deviate from its path, but without hindering its movement. They are placed at the top of the gate and in the middle of its travel.

The last accessories (for a gate without a mechanism) are the mechanical door stops. The stops define the travel of the door, i.e. the final position of the door for both opening and closing.

To automate a gate leaf, we install a metal (or plastic) rack. The rack is a toothed bar that cooperates with the motor's gear for motion transmission.

The motor is placed in the center of the door's travel so that it always has contact with the door. It has a gear that transmits motion from the mechanism to the door via the rack.

Beyond the mechanism, an essential accessory for the safety of the entire construction are the safety photocells. The safety photocells are placed on either side of the opening and check if there is an obstacle in the path of the door. If an obstacle is detected during the closing of the door, the photocells instruct the mechanism's control panel to stop the closing of the door and initiate the reverse movement (opening).

Also, for even greater safety, a safety beacon could be installed, which gives a visual signal when the door is in operation. This is usually installed when the door is adjacent to busy roads, roads with heavy traffic, and in areas where visibility is limited.

Finally, in cases where the range of the remote controls is not as desired, an external antenna can be installed to boost the signal.

Metal rack

The metal rack is delivered in one-meter sections. It is galvanized for greater resistance to outdoor conditions. The rack's cross-section is 12x30mm, the diametral pitch is 4 (module 4), and it has 3 spacers per piece. It can be installed on gate leaves with a maximum weight of 2 tons.

A key point of attention is the gap that must exist between the gear and the rack. Ideally, this gap should be 1.5mm.

gap between gear and rack

If this gap does not exist, the mechanism is forced to carry the door along its entire length of travel instead of simply pushing it. This will cause wear and tear, and sooner or later problems will arise in its operation. Its installation is done by welding to the door.

Conversely, if the gap is large, the cooperation between the gear and the rack will not be correct, and jerks and stresses will be created in the motor. Therefore, particular attention is required to create this gap.

The Autotech S5060Τ control panel is included in the set and is integrated into the mechanism. It is a control panel that combines simplicity of use with all necessary functions and has been tested over time. It pairs perfectly with the NORTON-2500-OIL mechanism.

Technical specifications:

  • It has a receptacle for the mechanism's limit switches.
  • We can adjust the mechanism's force.
  • There is the option for soft start and stop for less wear and tear on the mechanism and garage door.
  • Accepts safety photocells which interrupt movement when they encounter an obstacle during door closing and initiate reverse movement (opening).
  • There is an available setting for automatic door closing with user-selectable closing start time. The use of photocells is essential for automatic closing operation.
  • There is the option of electric braking.
  • The opening direction is adjusted with a microswitch.
  • The panel can accept a push-button (key-operated or simple push-button).
  • The panel can accept a 230VAC warning light without a flasher or a 230VAC illumination lamp.
  • It has an integrated receiver with simple operation.
  • User information regarding the mechanism's functions is provided by LED lights.

The above control panel has been tested by thousands of users and has proven to be extremely reliable. Additionally, it features functions such as mechanism force adjustment, and slow start and stop, which make it one of the best choices on the market today.

Operation of sliding gate photocells

Photocells are a product that dramatically increases safety in the use of a sliding mechanism at minimal cost. These specific photocells (IR5001P) are extremely reliable and operate with 12-24 VDC or 12-24 VAC, making them compatible with most control panels on the market. They have been on the market for years and do not present problems. They require no maintenance and are quite reliable even in difficult weather conditions.

sliding garage door mechanism photocells

Photocell operation method: The transmitter emits an infrared light beam, in the non-visible spectrum, which is directed towards the receiver. When there is no obstacle interrupting the beam, the door operates normally. When the door is closing and the beam is interrupted by an obstacle (vehicle, pedestrian, pet, etc.), the control panel instructs the mechanism to stop the door's closing and start the reverse movement (opening). If the beam is interrupted while the door is opening, it continues its path normally, while if it is open, it is not allowed to start closing.

An alternative to wired photocells is the installation of reflective photocells. These photocells do not require wiring on both sides of the door, so they are easier to install. They are preferred in cases where the door and surrounding area have been completed without provision for wiring. They incur a small additional cost compared to wired photocells but are a very good solution when wiring cannot be run.
