Installation of a swing gate operator - Specifications

The installation of a swing gate operator is relatively simple, provided that due attention is paid to certain specific dimensions. These dimensions are as follows:

  • The width of the left and right gate leaves W& WR respectively.
  • The distances CL, DL & CR, DR. These dimensions are important when the operator is installed on the same side from which the gate opens. (Conversely, when the gate opens outwards and the operator is inside or vice versa, these dimensions do not play a role, but the clear passage width is reduced)
  • The maximum number of gate opening/closing cycles per day and per hour.
  • The gate design. What interests us in the design is whether it allows air to pass through without resistance. That is, a wrought-iron gate is the best case, while a solid gate without gaps is certainly a gate that can face problems when strong winds prevail.

Our company is always ready to help you choose the right operator for your gate. By phone or email, you can contact us and we will guide you in choosing the motor for your gate. It is necessary to know the above information, and in case of sending an email, photos of the gate and the installation point of the operators would facilitate our selection.

Analysis of critical dimensions for selecting a swing gate operator

WL, WR: width of each gate leaf

CL, CR: open each leaf 90ο and measure the distance perpendicular to the gate from a potential obstacle (structural element, tree, etc.)

DL, DR: Measure perpendicular to the closed gate the distance from the installation point of the operator's base to the point where the gate hinge is installed.

We measure distances from the center of the hinge for greater accuracy:

Visual checks during swing gate operator installation

The first point of inspection when installing a swing gate operator is whether there is space for the arm. Open the gate 90o and observe if there is space behind it for the operator. If the gate abuts a structural element or other obstacle (like the right leaf in the diagram below), then an operator cannot be installed without modifying the gate or creating the appropriate space. (In this specific case, digging into the structural element and creating space for the motor)

inability to install swing arm on the right

Depending on the user's needs, the gate can be of an open or closed type. Open-type gates allow visibility and air circulation, as they are usually designed with bars. Conversely, closed-type gates do not allow visibility to and from the area and, of course, wind passage. This often makes movement difficult, as wind pressure exerts great forces on the gate and, consequently, on the operator. Therefore, in areas where strong winds prevail, it is wrong to install an operator on a solid swing gate. In the best-case scenario, the gate will not operate correctly (it will partially close) when there is wind pressure, and there are high chances of the operator being damaged.

This point requires special attention, as no manufacturer's warranty covers damages caused by wind pressure. In many cases, we could achieve better gate performance by installing a more powerful operator and/or an electric lock. In most cases, however, our advice is not to install a swing gate operator on a solid gate unless it is protected from strong wind pressures. (e.g., in densely populated areas, if there is a tall building in front, etc.)

Also, a basic prerequisite for installing an operator on a swing gate is that it must operate perfectly manually and have mechanical stops.

Mechanical stops define the end of the gate's travel in both the open and closed positions.

Swing gate operator installation distances - Operating modes

Swing gate operators can operate in 2 ways:

1st way: They pull the gate to open it and push it to close it.

2nd way: They push the gate to open it and pull it to close it.

The following diagrams illustrate the operating principle of a swing gate. The gate rotates around an axis (H) defined by its hinges (from their center).

The motor is supported by 2 pivots:

  1. The first is fixed and is the point where the operator is attached to the structural element. (P1)
  2. The second is movable and is the point where the operator is attached to the gate. (P2)

These three points H, P1, P2 define a triangle with fixed sides H-P1 & H-P2 and one with variable length P1-P2. Depending on the installation method, the length P1-P2 increases when the gate opens and decreases when it closes, or vice versa.
The distance from the center of rotation of the operator to the center of rotation of the gate (H-P1) determines the operation of the operator. This is defined by the distances X and Y which are clearly visible in the next diagram.

These distances are determined by the operator manufacturer and must be adhered to during installation. A detailed table with these distances follows below.

Also, to determine point P2, we follow this procedure: In the first installation method, after we have defined point P1, we determine point P2 at a distance Le where the piston is extended almost to the end of its stroke. In the second installation method, after we have defined point P1, we determine point P2 at a distance Lc where the piston is retracted almost to the limit of its stroke.

Detailed diagrams and tables follow, where S2 and S1 are the stops for the open and closed positions respectively.

1st installation method for swing gate operator

mpc sw400 installation dimensions

This installation method is the most widespread and has the most advantages, as it does not alter the gate's design, the mechanisms are located inside the area, thus protected, and the clear opening width remains the same as before the mechanism's installation. The only disadvantage is that specific spaces are required for the mechanism's installation.

2nd installation method for swing gate operator

swing single leaf right swing arm

This installation method is rarely used. The motor is installed within the opening and pushes the gate to open it while pulling it to close it. It offers advantages, the most significant being the possibility of installation even when the necessary spaces required by the first installation method are not available. Also, the mechanism does not alter the appearance of the gate and is located inside, thus protected. Disadvantages of this method are that it reduces the clear passage width and that the gate opens outwards, posing a risk to passersby, etc.

Double-leaf swing garage door - wiring

Wiring of double-leaf swing gate

  • (1) The operator requires a 4x1.5mm² or 4x2.5mm² cable if the installation point of the automation is far from the control panel. (It is advisable to have the operator on a separate fuse in the control panel.) The cable must be waterproof and in a conduit with a diameter of at least Φ16. The provision left by the electrician must be sufficient (1.5m) to reach the installation point of the electronic control panel.
  • (2) Wired photocells require a 4×0.6mm² cable for the receiver and a 2×0.6mm² cable for the transmitter. Usually, we place the receiver near the operator and the panel. If it is impossible to route a cable across for the photocells, we can install photocells with a reflector, which require wiring only on one side. (So line 2 is not required)
  • (4) For a pushbutton (or key switch), a 2x0.5mm² cable is required (not included in the kit).
  • (5) The remote control receiver requires a 3x0.5mm² cable (in our case, it is integrated into the panel).
  • (6) The safety beacon requires a 2x1.5mm² cable (not included in the kit).
  • (7) The electric lock requires a 2x1.5mm² cable (not included in the kit).

Notes:

  • Single-leaf or double-leaf gates require one control panel.
  • PVC Heliflex flexible conduits are the most suitable for this type of installation.
  • Wiring must be protected and watertight to prevent short circuits, etc.

ProfelmNet PSD-36T remote controls for swing gate operators

Swing gate operator remote control

The ProfelmNet PSD-36T remote control has 4 buttons to which we can set 4 different operators. It is a fixed 12-bit code at 433.92 MHz. It is easy to use, well-designed, and works perfectly with the control panels of swing gate operators.

Manual Override for MPC SW400 operator

Insert the key into the slot as shown in the image and turn it clockwise.

Installation instructions for MPC SW400 operator

The kit comes with Greek instructions that are easy to follow, provided one has basic knowledge and is "handy". Otherwise, it is advisable to call a specialized technician.

The instructions include detailed steps for installing the operator base, the operator itself, and all accessories that a swing gate kit may contain (photocells, remote controls, beacon, antenna, etc.)
